Google Drive Work

We have been working on an on-line version of the information we would like to have in the report. Here is the last version before we went of to create our own versions. A bigger version can be found at :https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1_0PctsgCrVKIwqG2EXR4Fr5BsSBuCQOBeMSVk3k0lPE

Another thing we have been working on was the Sphinx. Unluckily  somebody destroyed it and therefore we will have to make a new one.

We also added an Eiffel tower on our model, in order to create a modern structure which can compare the size of the Eiffel tower. The size of the Eiffel tower is 324m and is in our model 32.4cm tall. We did a trial an error method to create the tower in the correct size.

What we have managed to do!

We have managed to be finished with a lot of tasks, and are soon gluing the pyramids on top of the base for the finished product.

<----- One of our first attempts at the Great Pyramid.

<----- What we did to make the pyramids. The line segment at the middle of the triangles is the length of the slant height of the pyramid.

Although the calculations of some of the pyramids were wrong, due to misunderstanding, we have finished creating the pyramids with the correct measurements, and also checked it to see if they look right, by measuring the height. Some of the pyramids' height are 2-3 mm shorter or longer, but that is understandable as we have cut and glued them together which makes it not very accurate.

As a result of these finished made pyramids, we have started to spray-paint them gold - which Mr Nigel provided for us - and we have also received plywood for the base which we will cover with black paper.

The pyramids are still being sprayed. We have already done two layers of spray, and are soon finished with the spraying. What is a problem, however, is that we used to much spray for each layer so the golden colour is running down, making the colour look uneven on the pyramid. We hope that this won't be noticed when they are dry, and displayed.

The plywood is very big, so we have decided to place our already-made accurate map of the location of the pyramids in the middle. On the map, we have made squares which are the same sizes as the base of our scaled down pyramids. By placing a compass on the corners of the squares, we will know exactly where the pyramids are supposed to be placed, as the marks will be traced onto the black paper. After this, we can just remove the map, and glue the pyramids to the black paper of the base.

NEW DIMENSIONS

Last lesson, I had finished the Menkaure pyramid, and soon found out that we had the wrong dimensions. The reason for this, was because of a misunderstanding of which angle was 53 between the group, and therefore some calculations were wrong. Now, I have looked up on all the measurements again, and done the calculations again in order for us to continue next lesson. The new dimensions are listed here:

The Great Pyramid
Base: 23.03 cm
Height: 14.6 cm
Slant height: 18.6 cm

Khefren Pyramid
Base: 21.5 cm
Height: 14.35 cm
Slant height: 17.9 cm

Menkaure Pyramid
Base: 10.5 cm
Height: 6.55 cm
Slant height: 8.7 cm

Pyramids of Queens
G1a & G1c
Base: 3.5 cm
Height: 2.32 cm
Slant height: 2.91 cm

G1b
Base: 4 cm
Height: 2.65 cm
Slant height: 3.32 cm

Failures

Sooo.........
We've had a few fails. The first, Khufu Mark one (In red card)ended up slaughtered by glue and inaccuracy. Khufu Mark two (In black card) ended up with one nice edge, two half-nice edges, and one pretty poor edge. Menkaure Mark 1 ended up too short, and Khafre V1 is not yet finished, on the grounds of "Don't bother, it's probably wrong."......
On the upside, though, We've decided on a colour scheme. I originally wanted it as "gay" as possible, but I was quickly downvoted. Second, Lodin and I wanted a sort of warm scheme, with red, yellow and orange pyramids, but this was also downvoted. In the end, we settled on gold pyramids on black ground (Though I would've liked it to be silver instead of gold.)

So far - Anisha

We now think that we have enough information to get started with the maths of the project, even though we have only spent a double lesson to gather the info. We have decided to create a plan on exactly where the position of all the pyramids will be, which we think will make it easier for us when placing the pyramids on the real base. We have not yet decided upon the material we will use, but it will most likely be cardboard. The group is working well together, and that is very good!

Dimensions of the Pyramids

These are the dimensions of the great pyramid: Made by Marie and Lodin on August 24th 2012.

Great Pyramid:

The base of the pyramid covers 55,000m2 (592,000 ft2) with each side greater than 20,000m2 (218,000 ft2) in area.

The length of a base is 9131 Pyramid Inches from corner to corner in a straight line.

The length of a base side at the base socket level is 9,131 Pyramid Inches or 365.24 Pyramid Cubits.

The length of a base side at sidereal socket level is 9,131.4 Pyramid Inches or 365.256 Pyramid Cubits.

The volume of the pyramid is: V = 1/3 base area x height = 161,559,817,000 cubic Pyramid Inches = 10,339,828.3 cubic Pyramid Cubits. [(5,813.2355653 Pyramid Inches)/3 * 9 131 Pyramid Inches * 9 131 Pyramid Inches]

The length of the perimeter at the sidereal socket level is 36,525.63629 Pyramid Inches.

The perfect formula height of the pyramid including the missing apex is 5 813.2355653763 Pyramid Inches, calculated from perimeter of base divided by 2 Pyramid Inches.

The height to the missing apex is 5,812.98 Pyramid Inches.

The Pyramid Inch (PI) = 1.0011 present inches, and 1.0010846752 British Inches.

The Pyramid Cubit or Sacred Cubit = 25 pyramid inches.

The Pyramid of Khafre:
Khafre's Pyramid, or the 2nd Pyramid, is easily recognisable by the layers of its original casing stones that still remain near its summit and this, along with the fact that it actually stands on a higher part of the plateau, gives the impression that it is taller than the Great Pyramid. An optical illusion, as it is only 136m (446 ft) tall, with sides of 214.5m (704ft), a surface area of 11 acres and an angle of 53 degrees. It also has lost some of its original height through the years, once being 143.5m (471ft) tall.

The Pyramid of Menkaure:
Khafre's son, Menkaure, built the smallest of the 3 main Pyramids on the Giza Plateau. This one was only a mere 65.5m (215ft) tall, nowadays 62m (203ft), with sides of only 105m (344ft) and an angle of 51.3 degrees. It is thought that this Pyramid was altered during its construction, and made a lot bigger than originally planned. The original, smaller Pyramid had a simple descending corridor and burial chamber, but when it was enlarged, a new corridor was built with 3 portcullises and a small panelled chamber. Later still, another burial chamber, along with a storeroom were added at a lower level. This Pyramid, like its 2 neighbours, has a north facing entrance.
The Great Sphinx:
The Great Sphinx, or as the ancients knew it, “Shesib Ankh” or “the living image”, has to be one of the most recognizable constructions in history. Think of the Sphinx and you The Great Sphinx automatically think of Egypt and the Giza Plateau.
Sculpted from soft sandstone, many believe that it would have disappeared long ago had it not been buried in the sand for so many long periods in its lifetime. The body is 60m (200ft) long and 20m (65ft) tall. Its face is 4m (13ft) wide with eyes measuring 2m (6 ft) high. It faces the rising sun, and was revered so much by the ancients, that they built a temple in front of it.
The 18th Dynasty King, Thutmose IV installed a stele between its front paws, describing how, when Thutmose was a young Prince, he had gone hunting and fell asleep in the shade of the Sphinx ‘s head. Thutmose had a dream where Ra Hor-Akhty the sun God, talking through the Sphinx, spoke to him, telling the young Prince to clear away the sand because the Sphinx was choking on it. The Sphinx said to  him that if he did this, he would become King of Egypt .

Queens Pyramids:
They seem to have a slope of about 52 degrees, and rise to a height of about one-fifth that of Khufu's pyramids.
G 1a is the northernmost of the small pyramids, lying about 61 meters from the base of Khufu's pyramid.
The base of G1a measures 49.5meters, and it would originally stood 30.25 meters high. Today it is stripped of much of its original casing, and has lost almost two thirds of its height.
G1b It is located about ten meters south of G 1a, and lies on the same north-south axis. Its base is about 49 meters square, and its original height would have been about 30 meters.

The southernmost of the three pyramids is G 1c.
According to Mark Lehner, G 1c, lying about 3.8 meters south of G 1b and slightly offset to the east, is the most complete

The Queen's Pyramid dimensions (June, Marie and Lodin)
The three Queen's pyramid lie 56.2m (=107 cubits) from the eastern edge of Khufu's pyramid. Like Khufu's pyramid all satellite pyramids have an angle of inclination of nearly 52°.
The ground where those pyramids were built is sloping slightly to the south, this is probably the reason, why their corners are not exactly right-angled.
The side lengths measured are from 45.2 to 49m (87 to 90 cubits). Some Egyptologists calculate 88 cubits which would be a fifth of the side length of Khufu's pyramid. They think that, notwithstanding the sloping ground the builders wanted that the tips of the pyramid would be optically on the same height (G1a = 56 cubits=29.3m, G1b = 58 cubits=30.25m).
G 1c is also the largest of the three Queen's Pyramids of Khufu, with a base length of 46.25 meters. It would have originally stood 29.62 meters high.

A Grade 10 Maths Project

We are four 10th grade students from IST, and for our maths project we are to create all the pyramids of Giza to scale using our own maths knowledge and by doing research. It would also be good if we can make something to show how huge the pyramids are, eg. Nidarosdomen or Empire State Building.
We will not get much guidance from our math teacher, so it is important that we work hard and do our best. I
For my group: KEEP GOING :D

Names of the Pyramids
- The Great Pyramid/ Pyramid of Cheops
- The pyramid of Khafre/ Pyramid of Cephren
- The Pyramid of Menkaure/ Pyramid of Mycerinus
